The term goes back to the days of the telegraph in the 1800s. So called wire services were formed which collected news stories and distributed them to newspapers by telegraph. The biggest services were AP (Associated Press), UPI (United Press International), and Reuters. Today many of the news stories you read in your local paper will have a byline from one of these services. With the growth of radio, TV, and the internet wire services don't play quite the same role as then but they still exist and you can go to their web sites to find news. Of course telegraph wires have been replaced by fiber optics, satellites, microwaves, etc. but the old term is still used.

Mark Twain wrote in his book Roughing It that he was working as a telegraph operator in Virginia City, Nevada in 1863 when the news came over the wire that the Union Army had won the Battle of Gettysburg. He wasn't allowed to share this news with anyone because it was a wire service report for the newspapers in California. The public had to wait a few days for the papers to be printed and transported back over the Sierras.
