My boyfriend and I are studying abroad in Spain this May but he doesn't know if he needs to get a visa or passport since he is a Mexican born citzen and only a U.S. resident...Please help

You'll need a passport, but any resident of an American country (the continent, not specifically the USA) can stay in Spain without a visa for up to 6 months.

If you're going to be studying though, it might be worth enquiring about a NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) and a residency card (Tarjeta de Residente Comunitario).
