we have 3 chinnies :)
we love them so much, they DO NOT STINK, they are very sweet, but a little jumpy if they dont know the person.
we have a standard gray male, he's so sweet and gentle (3 years old)
a mosiac white female, she nice too but more skiddish than the male (2 years old)
and they had a baby who is white also, she's the sweetest little thing, and an escape artist (6 months old)
we currently have 2 cages set side by side (we cant have the male trying to mate with his daughter)
we are working on a chinnie room in our basement (partially finished basement) there is a small room down there that we are going to put chicken wire or something over any openings they could escape from and put logs, rocks, hay, toys ect for it to be their play room. that way i wont have to worry so much about them chewing something important.

I've had two chinchillas in the past. One was extremely tame and people friendly: the other was a nervous wreck from day one and remained so. They do NOT stink, but they do need exercise and need a good run in the house each day, but beware they are little chewers and escape artists! They love a sand bath and that can be a bit of a messy business as they spray it around everywhere. They are lovely little creatures if you are prepared to give them the time and commitment they need: but they can be prone to illness and its unusual for them to recover if they get a virus as they do downhill fast when ailing.

Chilli's are a big committment and anyone should think VERY carefully before getting one. They can be great fun and really naughty. They are smart, in some ways. Ours knows what it should not do, and tries to do these things all the time. They are prone to getting into scrapes, i.e. jumping down the loo, or out of the window, or into an open tin of paint. If they can get into trouble they will. They do not smell and are easy to look after once you have familiarised yourself with their care. However, they need exercise, and I really feel unhappy at mine having to live in a cage, and try to let him out every day. It is much better if you can devote a small room to them and make it as much like their natural environment as possible. Mine loves to wind up my cats, who can never get near him, he is so fast. But they are delicate creatures, with small thin bones and need to be looked after carefully. Some are more friendly than others. My chilli likes to have his chin scratched, but only in his cage, outside I am not allowed to go near him, although if I am sitting on the floor he will run all over me. They are also very destructive, and will chew any wood they find, which means being very careful where they are allowed to run. I find chillis have a great sense of fun and mischief.
Just be sure you can provide the right environment for them.

I have 19 chinchillas and they have all different personalities. The majority of my chins are very friendly. They come running up to the cage doors to have their chin scratched. I do have a few chins, who do not care for me and prefer not to be touched.
They do live for a long time. Average lifespan is 12-15 years with some chins living longer than that. My oldest chin right now is 12 years old.
Chins can be messy (kicking bedding out of the cage, they are constant poopers, when they take a dust bath- it can be messy) Chins do not smell. If there is an odor associated with them it has to do with their husbandry (i.e. YOU are not cleaning them properly)

We had a grey chinchilla for about 12yrs, very good natured, especially when they get used to you. You need to give them plenty of room for a run and jumping session ! great fun. Ours was a nibbler so the skirting board got it big time. Try www.sleepychinchilla.com and then see if you can resist having one.!
