Some of the stereotypes are things like people with mental illness are not intelligent, dangerous, not reliable, not 'valid',etc.
The reason many of these stereotypes are wrong is because in one way or another - we all suffer from some mental illness, so who's to decide that anyone is much different from anyone else? We all suffer from issues in our lives that we have to deal with, which can make us sick. Some illnesses are caused from chemical imbalances in the body, which can often occur due to illness, stress on the body, not enough nurturing as a child, etc.
I believe the stigma from being deemed mentally ill is one of the hugest factors in preventing people from getting well. If we started associating mental illness with physical illness and not dividing them - people would be more likely to not only welcome help, but to stop putting people who are suffering from this illness into a different category from themselves!

One stereotype is that people with a mental illness are CRAZY. This is wrong because there are different types of mental illnesses and MOST of them are not "crazy".

One stereotype is that they can help themselves an in actuality they cant. they usually have a deficiency or imbalance somewhere. Or if their really effed up that their not humans any more and no longer deserve our respect. Every person deservs to be treated with respect and not like an animal no mater what illness he or she has.

stereotypes of people with mental illness: they will borrow cigarettes or money, they can't hold a job, unable to live on their own, they are manipulative.
because they are stereotypes and they are different levels of mental illness and altogether different diagnosis and outcomes of treatments.

If you identify a person with a psychological disorder a person can lose their identity and become the personification of that disease. They are no longer an individual.
