bollywood is the hindi film industry based in bombay. it is the main film industry of india, however, not the only one. there's kollywood for the tamilians and other film industries that are not that well known. bollywood cinema is becoming more american as each year passes and they started filming more flicks in america like KANK, KAANTE, and others. If you look at Don, and you see what Kareena Kapoor and SHah Rukh Khan are wearing, she and he are not wearing any indian clothing in the song "YEh Mera DIl". Yuva and KANK are based on american themes of relationships. you see, bollywoood movies are americanizing. that's no good, b/c you'll loose indian culture and all that good stuff abt india.

Bollywood is the informal name given to the popular Mumbai-based Hindi language film industry in India. The term is often incorrectly used to refer to the whole of Indian cinema.
The name is a portmanteau of Bombay (the former name for Mumbai) and Hollywood, the center of the American film industry.
Bollywood is also commonly referred to as "Hindi cinema",
Bollywood has its largest diasporic audiences in the UK, Canada, Australia and the U.S, all of which have large Indian immigrant populations. Bollywood is a strong part of popular culture of not only India, but also of the rest of South Asia, the Middle East, parts of Africa, parts of Southeast Asia, and among the South Asian diaspora worldwide.Westerners would tend to classify most Bollywood films as musicals, because few movies are made without at least one song-and-dance number. The standard Bollywood movie is expected to contain a number of elements, and one of the essentials is catchy music in the form of song-and-dance numbers woven into the script. Indeed, a movie's music is often released before the movie itself and helps increase the audience. However the term "musical" is misleading because songs in Bollywood movies are done with professional playback singers, electronic instrumentation, and world-class musical composition.

Its the Indian version of Hollywood based in Bombay(now Mimbai). Taking the first letter of Bombay i.e B & replacing it with the H of Hollywood has caused emergence of the term Bollywood!
