People who drop out of high school soon find they made a mistake. The GED or General Equivalancy Diploma is a way of correcting that mistake.
Most communities have adult education programs available at little or no cost. An adult without a high school diploma can take the required classes tehy lack--and once they have completed the courses satisfactorily, are awarded a GED. Such classes are geared for working adults (with evening classes, etc.) to make them accessible.
Once a person has earned a GED, it serves as a high school diploma, to all intents and purposes. Many people take vocational training once they have a GED; others start college (though usually at an "open admission" school to start with, like a community college)--and go on to get college degrees. At the very least, a GED opens doors to at least some jobs (and possibly options like joining the military, if a person is fit and young enough).

Graduation Equivalent Diploma......
What it tells potential employers can be several things, depending on the circumstances....
1) you are educationally smart enough to earn your GED, but for some reason left school due to things such as economic hardship....or
2) it could say that you are so unruly that you were unable to remain in an organized, structured situation (day school hours) for four years and follow the rules in order to graduate. This could tell a potential employer that you are 'trouble".
3) some people just don't like the day schedule of a high school and 4 year structure and are better off in night classes while working in the day hours.

It's a General Education Development diploma. You usually test for it if you are too old or for some other reason can't go back to school. It's a test that you can prepare for and it tests whether you have acquired the necessary knowledge to have graduated from high school. It's basically a high school equivalency.

A General Education Diploma is the equivalent to a high school diploma, however you might not be able to get into some universities with it or get certain entry level jobs.
