Not always, but often. Sometimes the characteristics that make up incompetent jerks match up with successful businessmen. Go figure.

No, not always. There are times that bosses have you do all the work and they do not try to learn to do it so they tend to be lost and ignorant in your absence; but then there are those (and I have worked with a few until now) that know how to do their job plus also are at least aware of your work and are not lost in your absence. I always believed that bosses usually know more than you, but come to find out (in my current job), sometimes you have to teach them how to do things (and they get paid more than you). Yes, there are employers that look for degreed individuals, but there are also those that look for experienced individuals. I really believe that employers should not go so much one way or the other, because a degree not necessarily shows what you know, but also past expierence does not always mean the individual learned it well or as it should be.

So how did this incompetent guy get into this position
And no most people I have worked under for the last 40 years had their act together. Maybe you should set your goals a little higher and find a better place to work.

Yes bosses are sometimes incompetent. Yes they sometimes don't know what they are doing.
If you continue to find yourself in this type of poisonous work environment, you need to do an assessment of yourself to recognize how you allow yourself to get into these types of messes, see if you contribute to make it a toxic place to work and what is needed to correct the situation.

Because a lot of companies pay more attention to an educational degree instead of someone with experience.
