No, they are not poisonous. They do produce a chemical which smells and tastes bad so birds and other predators won't eat them. They will bite you if you squeeze them, but it will not hurt you.

All lady birds contain an emetic (something that tastes foul and makes you vomit), if you eat them you will be ill but not die. The bright red colour is a warning to potential predators to remind them how nasty they taste. Once a bird has eaten one ladybird it will very rarely eat another.
