Hard to explain, but in a nutshell the Universe is a vast empty space, which if you can imagine, is always expanding into what scientists call "non existence". This question is still unanswered because as humans we have an intellectual limit which is confined by what we cant explain. We will never be able to explain whats beyond our comprehension. We'd have to be on a higher plane of existence to see the whole picture

A specific environment composed of everything including earth itself. It's made of matter and non-matter (energy) and perhaps so called dark energy. Matter differentiates in "normal" matter and "dark matter" which doesn't shine and does interact with gravity only. It's about 15 billion years old and will freeze out in at least 10^75 years.
