Was the Old Testament written before the New Testament? And for all you Christians out there, do you think the New Testaments views on Capital Punishment are much more up to date? (i.e. being much more against it.)
(This is for an essay, so all serious answers would be appreciated)

Asking a Christian what they think about the 'new testament'???
The only reason they ever refer to the 'original' bible, 'old testament' is when they cant find something in their own bible to translate into 'proof' of what they are saying is the 'truth'!
I wonder what would happen if you were to base your essay on what you personally think about both bibles in fact on the Koran also, it would be refreshing don't you think?
How about something along the lines 'An eye for an eye' as opposed to 'Turn the other cheek'!?
I'm sure that would be a lot more interesting than the project you have been landed with.
As for your 'up to date' bit. They are all well past their sell by dates!
Ah well, keep reading and keep learning, but don't believe everything you read or everything you are taught.
Good luck with your essay I'm glad I don't have to mark them all up!!
Go on be a devil break the mould!!! Say you really believe that both bibles (and the Koran) have nothing at all to do with the way the world is today, and there is no reason why we should try to conform to any of them, they are 'not applicable'!!
Dare you.

Old testament is outrageousely older than the new. Jews follow the old testement. At some point a jew decided he was going to claim he was the son of God (Jesus) and thena bout 500 years after his death someone wrote the new testament, different books were written at different time and by different people. This is why the new testament is like a record of a game of "telephone" over 500 years and shouldnt be taken completely at face value but instead for its underlying morals, like all legends and myths theres a shred of truth the the crazy story is probably not to be taken literally.

Tough essay. The first question, yes, most of the "old testament" was put into writing from oral traditions after the Babylonian captivity, about 200 BC I think? Wikipedia could clear that up for you.

And the 2nd question is the hard one. Depending on who you ask, EVERYTHING Christ said or did supersedes the entire rest of scripture, and the rest of the Bible only has value in explaining the context of what Christ said. (Not a popular theory with Jews, and some Christians who think Leviticus is easier to follow than Luke.) As I say, depends whom you ask.

The old testament was before the new testament (hence, the "old" and the "new").

New Testament view on capital punishment? You mean where Jesus ACCEPTED the death penalty for Himself AND the 2 thieves (not murderers, mind you - thieves!)?

Here's an essay for you: if muslims in USA and UK believe sharia governs them over and above the USA/UK law, then why aren't they stoning adulterers and killing terrorists who plot the murder of innocents?
