low pressure areas, are within a system of weather that is more humid than the one you are comparing it too. ie: on one side of a weather system that is roughly 40* and humid, it wil be called a low pressure cool front if it moves in to an area that was 41* and dry. on the other side, it just left an area and a system that was 35* and More humid will be called a cool front. Got it?--
also, the barometer measures realative humidity. The more water in the air, the less the air pressure; because: air has mass that is nearly consistent throughout this planets atmosphere. It has mass, and weight here, so when water displaces it, the air weighs less: creating a "low pressure area"

Good question. High pressure centers are characterized by sinking air which warms and dries as it sinks. Consequently they are associated with clear skies good visibility and light winds. The air spreads out at the surface in an anticyclonic motion around the high. Low pressure centers are characterized by rising air, which cools, condenses, and forms clouds. Consequently they are associated with cloudiness, precipitation, and sometimes strong winds. You have two air masses here - mT or maritime Tropical which is warm, moist air that forms over ocean basins, the type of air that comes up into the US from the Gulf of Mexico; and cP, which is continental Polar air. This is dry cold air which originates over land and in high latitudes such as Canada or above the Arctic circle. Hope this helps you understand these terms a little better.

High pressure (ridge) is stable area with a clockwise rotation. A low pressure (trough) is a more unstable air mass (so more moisture) with a counter-clockwise rotation.
