Sad to say, but true. Many of the great people in this world were themselves, and ran with their own ideas and helped to create a better world, but were often outcasts of society. Conforming to society allows us to feel as though we belong within the collective, and have some semblance of acceptance and rights, etc. On the other hand, it can also suppress us an awful lot too. There aren't any easy answers to this question, other than:

We can - but there's a price to pay for everything, and most people seem to feel it's easier just to follow suit ...

well good question, i think as we get older..not sure how old you are..lol..but as we age..we do learn to be ourselves more. One reason for that is that we finally figure out who we are and what feels right within ourselves , but also, we learn that trying to please everyone just doesnt pay off..cause you really cant please everyone ..so we learn to give that all up and concentrate on just what it takes to have a happy life. Yes, its ok to make others happy..that is a very nice and unselfish thought. That is not what I am saying..what I am saying is..we learn to not compromise ourselves in the process. good luck.

Because we just don't know who our real selves are. We are so confused with all that stereotypes and today's' model of life that you can't distinguish the real you from the other person you would like to be, but you aren't.

because we:
are scared of who we really are
are afraid of looking stupid to someone else
want to fit in with other people
dont like ourself
like to put on an act
dont want people to really know us...

Because that is just to much for some people to handle, so they take on a different personality to please the majority of people.
