Anyone got any ideas other then doing experiments? Thanks

You could get different coloured baloons or balls to represent the different gasses in various proportions. There's a few things you could do - ask the class to find out how many of each colour (%s of course!) they would need to make up the atmosphere; or you could ask them to go into groups according to different gasses and give a presentation on the properties of their gas; or diffusion experiments - start them off holding/wearing differnet colours in teams - eg. 8 nitrogen kids, 2 oxygen etc. - start them off in different corners of the room according to gas type and to take 3 steps at a time in any direction, see how long it takes for the gas molecules to become evenly distributed; the coolest thing of course would be if you could get different coloured helium baloons you could release them to diffuse into the real atmosphere! (I did a charity baloon release and we had to first get permission from air traffic control, so check first!). Hope yous enjoy yourselves! xx

To start with there are 2 classes of gas . Lighter than air and many are explosive. Heavier than air like CO2 ,CO , Butane.
Now handle them as if they are in a confined space ,or small room with a door on it. In a confined space the gases tend to layer out according to weight.
How to avoid a large well leak .Be upwinds or at either side. Know your gases and there is one that many don't think it is dangerous . That is Butane , a very explosive gas but heavier than air . If u use a meter to measure it where do u get your gas sample. Remember it is heavy ,and most people ware their detector on their belt .Butane is so heavy your measurement should be within 6 in. of the ground.
Then there is the bad CO2 it is heavy enough to smother a fire . but if u are in confined space it could kill u if u fall on the floor,it can suffocate u.
Oxygen correct level is 20.9%
Nitrogen is 78%
green house 1.1%

Do some serious Mythbusters style mucking about with liquid nitrogen, nitrous oxide, neon lights, co2 in fizzy drinks, liquid oxygen etc. Or rip a complitation of stuff from youtube from Brainiac and Mythbusters and do a presentation.

oh yes... i love chemistry..

mix oxygen and hydrogen... one oxidises, the other burns...together they explode violently...

flour suspened in teh air supports combustion... and explodes... discuss...

drop sodium in water...

leave phosphorus out of the oil, and direct a jet of oxygen over it... or drop a bit into a BIG pyrex test tube filled with oxygen...

put coal fragments into a TT, connect it to another and creeate a water trap, heat the coal and after the water bath,ignite the coal gas... stopper teh tops,

you can also use sulphur dioxide and make rotten eggs gas... which we used to do until the kipps generator dumped all teh acid... and we had to evacuate the science block...

then you explain the combustible materials, when compressed explode violently...

obviously this is all very dangerous, but in a controlled environment..wow does it get their attention...
