You have to fill in 4 where there is an x and you have to fill in 8 when there is a y. Like this:

(4)(8)+9+(4)(4)(8)+977

32+9+128+977

Answer: 1146

x=4
y=8

so

xy+9+xxy+977 = (4*8)+9+(4*4*8)+977 = 1146

it is simple

This is pretty straightforward. Since you know the values of x and y, you can plug the number equivalents in in their place like so:

4(8)+9+4(4)(8)+977
Then just do the math.
