I think most Jamaican people are good people. Often, the ones who are smart, work hard and are educated have already left the island. Because of this and the corruption which has ensued on this island within the government from the 1970's forward by recruiting street gangs to help politicians get themselves elected etc. makes for a not very nice place to live.
Now that you know the basic, recent history of their beautiful island let me tell you a little about the basic culture of Jamaicans as I see it. Jamaicans are highly adaptive and can make almost anything work out of nothing. They are similar to Nigerians in being highly ingenuitive. This is because it is part of their historical culture, as a generalization, sort of like Asian guys being good at math. It has been said, "If you find yourself in Hell, find a Jamacian, and he can find you the way out and a cold glass of water."
As it was explained to me by a Jamaican the other day, most Jamaicans do not like to work in anything other than in a means to get money quickly. This is usually meaning driving a car for money, etc. do it now, get it over with and get money, anything to do with moving quickly. There is tons of highly fertile land in Jamaica, but most people don't want that kind of life. Farming is hard work and takes time to make money. Just a small amount of land can produce quite a bit of lucrative crops, if not for local consumption they can be exported. Some do this, but most won't.
There are a lot of people who don't have such a tolerant or positive viewpoint of Jamaicans as I do. I have heard such things from others as, 'the best thing needed in Jamaica is an AC130 gunship.' I do not agree; I do not sympathize with their viewpoint, but I see their point.
By the way, Jamaicans don't, 'live by the sea, with the sound of it when they wake up.' 99.9% are too poor. Most Jamaicans live in slummy areas near the major cities. Have you seen Kingston? Having said that many live in the countryside as well, which is much nicer, but In No way, shape or form do most of them live any kind of beach life.

Wow talk about ignorance. Lets base our whole opinion of a country's population on a few people that you've met. My family is Jamaican, though I was born in the US, and they aren't horrible, filthy, into drugs or any other stereotypes you want to place on Jamaicans. They're hard working, kind and well educated. So why don't you educate yourself and realize that every country has its good and bad people.
