Has there been a government program designed to help people that has actually done what it was supposed to do? The Great Society has devastated the inner family of the poor, especially in the minority community. Medicare cost have gotten out of control. Why should we trust the government to do this for us? Their intentions may be well, but their results are horrid

Maybe you have no problem providing for your own health care. Maybe you have health insurance through work, or your parents provide health insurance for you, or maybe you're just rich.

Unfortunately, millions of Americans don't have the benefits that you have. While there are many poor who are just lazy, many, many more people are without health insurance because of health problems, mental illness, job outsourcing (thanks, Mr. Bush), or other factors beyond their control.

Society has an obligation to help such people. It is amazing that the Religious Right, supposed Christians who are taught by Jesus to "feed the hungry" and minister to their needs, are the ones who are most against programs designed to do just that.

As for government running the program, it will be a real challenge to create a program that will work, but Americans don't back down from a challenge.

you don't provide your health care... unless your a doctor... and you heal yourself

you pay a company... and they provide it for you... and if you can't afford it... then I imagine the government could provide it better...

and ALL HEALTH CARE COSTS HAVE GOTTEN OUT OF CONTROL... do you pay for your own insurance? apparently not, because you didn't mention that?

the great society devistated the inner family of the poor, especially the minority community? why is it... when you talk to Repubilcans... poor people were somehow better off before welfare? I don't really buy that...

the only results that are more horrid than the government taking care of these problems... is GOVERNMENT NOT TAKING CARE OF ANY PROBLEMS... and just magically thinking they will go away on their own... they won't...

and most government programs actually help the majority of those they are designed to help, from what I've seen... of course there are some exceptions... but there are many failed capitalism ventures too...

Well Tom the answer to your question is very simple. Answer this and then you will know, has the government every installed a program that is not full of waste, inefficiencies and corruption?

The sooner we shrink the government the better America will be. I mean really how many laws do we need? They go in every day and pass laws and resolutions ad naseum and for what. We have enough laws in fact too many. How many gun laws do you need? How many family protection laws do you need? How many progressive laws do you need? None on the latter and we already have more than we need on the others. It is rediculous.

Congress is run by a bunch of corrupt career politicians, the sooner we get term limits on congress the sooner this country can get better.

I forgot about the examples. I have several friends who are doctors and we talk about this issue regularly. They site fact that in the socialized healthcare system of other countries you do not have to pay, but you also receive sub-standard care relative to America. For instance in the UK let's say you have a aneurism and suffer a hemorrhagic stroke, the healthcare system will admit you to the hospital and take very good care of you, assuming you survive for a week they will then deal with your aneurism. Is this the kind of triage type of healthcare system you want in America?

I have friends from the UK and Canada. When there is something serious they have told me their friends and family go to the USA to have it dealt with. Socialized medical care is sub-standard medical care.

Like Churchill stated socialism is the equal sharing of the misery. Ain't life great.

There are several examples of universal health care systems in European countries as well as Canada, New Zealand, Australia, etc. that provide a basis for an analysis of how well government-run programs work, what the differences are and what the difficulties are. Comparisons of the different types of plans instituted in these countries and their experiences over decades of implementation offer an opportunity to devise a plan that utilizes the good aspects of these plans and avoids some of the pitfalls. Removing the primary burden of providing health care benefits from employers could help to make them more competitive and at the same time provide health insurance for the 46 million Americans who currently have none. As it is the US spends a great deal of money on health care, has a lower life expectancy than most of the countries with universal health care and has many Americans with no health insurance whatsoever. Also many of the individuals covered by health insurance are in plans with limited choices and high costs to the covered individuals either for premiums or for using services outside of the basic plans. In addition, our current private insurance bureaucracy is extremely expensive because of the fragmented financing and paperwork. One website that provides a comparative analysis on this issue is Physicians for a National Health Program.

This is simple go look in your closet. Do you have your own MRI, ICU, and operating theater or Doctors standing by waiting for you???

Chances are the Government has these things and you don't But that is not a problem Wealthy people from all over the world fly to Switzerland for medical attention. The aristocrats in America can go there in their private Gulfstrean IV and enjoy the same privileges as the rest of the Global Community they boast of.

As for the rest of America That is the part that wasn't outsourced. We could use some help with basic care.

And if we work hard at our burger flipping Wallmart job we can also go to Switzerland for the world best medical treatment.

Go big Red Go

None.

But they are the best at deciding how much you need to pay in taxes, which is what a government monopolistic healthcare system would increase, dramatically.

I really wonder just how we survived as a country prior to income taxes.
