Enzymes in chloroplasts oxidize water molecules, meaning they remove electrons from water molecules. Then they use the gained electrons from water in conjunction with a photon of sunlight to produce high-energy electrons. These are capable of being transferred and used in the production of glucose in the dark reactions for the photosynthetic organism. Oxygen is the by-product of this oxidation of water.
