The oxygen sensor is basically the NOSE for the computer. It tells the computer how RICH or how LEAN the exhaust gasses are. When you first start the car (cold) the computer ignores the O2 sensor. After the engine has reached normal operating temperature, it will take information from the O2 sensor and then start controlling the amount of gas going into the engine.
The O2 reacts to heat! If too much gas residue is going through the exhaust (RICH) the temperature is cold and the computer will start to make changes. If there is not enough fuel residue flowing
(LEAN) through the exhaust, it tells the computer the exhaust is too hot.

The oxygen sensor (O2) measures how much unburned oxygen is in the exhaust. The computer uses this as an indication of how rich or lean the fuel mixture is so adjustments can be made to keep it properly balanced

02 sensors fail, and cost a ton of money, and make you get into knuckle-whacking action with your engine, that's what.

after the engine comes up to temp. and your vehicle is moving faster than 40 mph it monitors the air fuel ratio or combustion efficiency which then allows your system to go into closed loop where your vehicles computer controls the amount of fuel sent to each cylinder. Is part of your air pollution control system.
