My 8 month old just began sleeping on his tummy, and he does it face down on the crib mattress. I am worried about this because I've read that babies can re-breathe their own air and have trouble... he's certainly old and big enough to move around, but he will stay in this position for long periods... anybody got any info on this? Thanks!

My daughter has done this since she could roll over and she is 13 months old now. She sleeps bent in half with her face flat on the mattress. I finally realized that was her position in-utero, I guess it is comfortable for her. I just make a point to check on her before I go to sleep, and if it looks like she could suffocate, I move her (although she usually moves back). Also just make sure you use a snug fitting crib sheet and keep blankets and toys out of his bed at night. Good luck!

Baby Sleeps Face Down

I have 4 kids and by 8 months old they basically sleep the way that they want to, not the way you put them in the crib. Just make sure that there aren't any big bulky comforters that can cover his face...better to sleep him in layers with a light blanket and no stuffed animals in the crib either.

all of my children have slept face down and are okay. They let babies sleep face down for years. I think they found a study showing that SIDS is actually genetically linked somehow. Basically the child doesn't know to move when it isn't getting oxygen. Your little boy will be fine. Just don't let him sleep with cover, toys, etc.. that can get in his face.

Once he is old enough to roll over and turn back and forth the risk for SIDS greatly decreases! My daughter also liked to sleep on her stomach when she learned to flip and she also would put her face flat on her matress, which I was also extremely concerned about after how unsafe it looks. But no matter what I did she continued to sleep this was she eventually got use to turning her head to the side.

I I believe that as long as the baby is strong enough to lift his head, he can not in danger. But it not good to sleep without getting fresh air. You can just turn his head every time you see him do that. You can get rid of a bad habit before it starts.

My 4 month old does the same thing. At first I would try to gently roll him back over to his back, and he would immediately roll over to his tummy. So I peek in on hm and he always has his head turned sideways so he can breathe. As long as he can lift his head and/or turn to the side, he is fine.

If he can easily roll over then you can leave him. I know it is nerve-wracking my son did this too. He outgrew it pretty quickly. He sleep belly down sometimes, but always with his head to the side.

However a friend of mine kept rolling her son back over and he still sleeps face down, I don't know if that is connected, but I imagine staying face down for a long time in uncomfortable and discourages rolling into that position.

if you are using a bumper pad (which can be dangerous if baby can pull up and climb on it) make sure you are using a mesh one. Heres an idea..put a fan in baby's room that kind of blows in his direction so there is a fresh air being moved past him.
