I am wondering if anyone knows how many I can expect, I want to take the mother out of the birthing tank since the babies found their way back up through those little slats and I don't want the mom to eat them, but I don't want to put her back in the big tank if she is going to have more. Anyone here that can help me?

Thanks guys yeah she had 6 more since I asked the question and I am just taking the babies out as she has them. As soon as I think she is done I guess I'll put them back in the birthing tank.

Female guppies can retain a male's sperm for several months, and she will only allow herself to give birth if she feels it's safe. She will likely have more litters in the following weeks and months, so just keep a eye on her. She will have a dark spot under her tail that gets bigger and darker the closer she comes to giving birth (also known as being "gravid"). I find that in my guppies the spot turns very slighting red-black a few days before they give birth.

Also, don't worry about mom eating the babies. The ones that don't get eaten are the strongest, so you will only have the healthiest babies remaining. I know it's disappointing, because some litters will be entirely eaten, but you don't have to wait long for more.

If you want to help the babies survive, put some floating plants in the tank as well as some long ones planted in the bottom. The more places the babies have to hide, the more likely they are to survive.

It's very difficult to know for sure how long a female will continue having babies. She could have as few as 5-6 or as many as 50 or more, but typical is about 20-24. Give her a few more hours and see. Hopefully the babies will stay out of her way.
