After initial explorations in the nineteent century, Namibia was made a German colony, known as South West Africa, in 1884. In the First World War it was captured by South Africa, the conquest being completed in 1915. At the end of the First World war the allies confiscated all Germany's colonies and in 1921 the League of Nations gave South Africa a mandate to administer it. South Africa was then part of the British Empire. At the end of World War II, South Africa illegally annexed South West Africa. From 1966 there was a Marxist insurgency, SWAO. South Africa eventually ceded independence to Namibia in 1990.

Namibia is largely desert, thinly populated by the nomadic bushmen. Although in recent times there has been extraction of minerals, including uranium, in the past the area was of little value other than prestige. However, within the area of Namibia is Wlavis Bay, which is a natural harbour and which has alluvial diamonds, and is therefore of considerable ploitical interest. Walvis Bay was first colonised by the Portuguese, but became a British colony as an enclave within the German one. After the First World War it became part of South West Africa, but in 1971 South Africa took Walvis Bay into direct rule because of the SWAPO insurgency. Walvis Bay was finally reunited with Namibia in 1994.

do you mean namibia?

In the late 15th century, the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias became the first European to visit Namibia. Formerly called South-West Africa, the territory became a German colony in 1884. Between 1904 and 1908, German troops massacred tens of thousands of Herero, who had revolted against colonial domination. In 1915, during World War I, Namibian territory was taken over by South African forces. In 1921, it became a mandated territory of the League of Nations, under the administration of South Africa.

Namibia was, formerly, known, as "SOUTH WEST AFRICA", - which gave rise, to a sort of TRADES UNION, if you will, - called the "SOUTH WEST AFRICAN PEOPLE'S ORGANISATION"! Provided you are OLD ENOUGH, (a DEBATABLE POINT), - you MIGHT have heard the name "S.W.A.P.O.", - that, was BASED IN Namibia!
