I'd work up to your about to go into labor other wise you start getting lazy and your labor gets harder and longer when it's time for you to go in.

I get 8 weeks unpaid maternity leave and plan on just being out for about 6 weeks if all goes well. I'm due in June and will probably leave May 29th. This is my first and people say you usually carry a little longer with the first. It really does depend on how you're feeling though, so you might have a change of plans as you enter your last month.

If you only have 6 weeks, I would try to work up until the end, that way you will have all of your time after the baby is born. Remember you can always take the benefits from the Family Medical Leave Act and stay out for longer, but with no pay.

Are you in the US? Have you been at your job for a year or more? If so, you qualify for the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) Your employer is required by law to give you 12 weeks total off (although they can decide how much, if at all, to pay you.)

I would work up until labor so you have more time to bond with your baby after the delivery.

If you are able, work until you go into labor. Barring any medical reason that you are ordered to bed rest, you want to keep accruing sick and vacation time so you can use that and get paid while you are off work. You also might want to look into whether your short term disability policy at work will kick in for you. Mine at work would have if I had gotten pregnant three or four months after I came to this job (when my benefits kicked in), but I was pregnant when I took the job and was considered a pre-existing condition for short-term. Good luck.

i would work for as long as you are able to remain comfortable and perform your job. you don't want to take too much time off beforehand- you'll find yourself ultimately being bored with nothing left to do at home...i learned that the hard way, when i took off a month before the birth. At first it was nice being able to catch up on loose ends and getting things ready...but with 2 weeks left to go and absolutely nothing to do at home, i would call my husband at work repeatedly during the day- i was going stircrazy and was bored!

personally i would work untill the day i went into labor. that way you get to spend as much time with your bundle of joy and bond. it will be hard and you will probably be sore and tired but i'm sure you could tuff it out. good luck and congrats!
