You should have full time spyware and virus protection.
You should update your spyware and virus protection weekly and run a full scan weekly with each.
If you download from untrusted sources (file sharing, free software sites, etc.) then after each installed program or at least once each day scan for spyware and viruses.

I do this daily for 4 machines. Each one starts 1 hour later and is allowed to scan all machines. So it takes me 4 1/2 hrs to scan all the machines. A scans a,b,c and d, B scans b,a,c and d, ext...

Atleast 2 times a week , or you could just schedule to scan when you think your cpu wont be in use,like when you go to bed or when youre at work .

Weekly, At least, and have an Antivirus that Works to scan any active files as you go through the internet
Your AV should look at all emails, as well as checking any downloading page content

If the AV is a resident program when you are online
no need. But keep the program updated regularly.
AVG scans e mail/s also. www.grisoft.com
To be on safe side program your AV
to run twice a month.

That depends on your surfing habits. Only you can decide what is appropriate for you. My surfing habits allow me to feel quite safe doing an Antivirus scan every 5 days. No matter what my surfing habits are, I do a full Antispyware scan every day.

That depends on how foolish you are about using P2P sites and downloading freeware! This stuff just doesnt jump in yourPC! YOU have to put it there!
