I recently posed this same question to my grandfather, who has spent lots of his life in various American woods, and here is his answer:
"One of the first things I learned when I went to Alaska was that if I ever was attacked by a Grizzly (Brown/Kodiak) , the thing to do was to play dead. If I was able to do that without the Bear catching on to the act I would probably get bitten, tossed around some and then left for dead and , hopefully the Grizzly would leave. On the other hand, if I was attacked by a Black bear I should run as fast as I could and get out of there because the Black bear will EAT you. This does not only apply to the Alaskan Black bear, but to all Black bears, even those who live in New England. When I asked a guide in Alaska about this he told me that I did not have to be the fastest guy in the group, just faster than ONE other !!!! I, being a rather devout coward, always opted to carry a 12 gauge shot-gun loaded with rifled slugs whenever I went into the bush fishing. Better safe than eaten !!!!"
I should get him an account!

LOL! I always thought the same thing. What does he do, just walk by and say OK, this one's already dead or will he eat us if he is hungry. I Think if he is hungry enough, he would definitely stop and snack on us...

taking part in ineffective is stupid, yet working is much extra stupid. The undergo will chase you. you could make particularly some noise - banging pots mutually or something that makes a noisy noise. do no longer project the undergo, the two. in simple terms lower back off intense-high quality and slowly on a similar time as make as plenty noise as you could. many of the time, bears do no longer pick to run into you, the two. of direction while you're messing with cubs, there's no longer something you're able to do this isn't get you killed. maximum suitable thank you to maintain from encountering bears is to stay out of their territory.

If you play dead, grizzlies may leave you alone, but black bears will begin to eat you or drag you away
