A phobia is an irrational fear.
One can dislike spiders and homosexuals and one can have a phobia against either.
Homophobia is an over-used word. Homophobia would be an intense, irrational fear of homosexual. One may dislike homosexuals or may be prejudiced against homosexual. That does not mean one has homophobia.
I believe homophobia is used as much and in the way it is in an attempt to make someone who does not like homosexuals look irrational and crazy.
In other words, it's spin.

I see dislike as different levels --like an extreme dislike that changes the way I go about a normal day --could be a phobia.I believe u can have a dislike for homosexuals and not have a phobia--just depends on what level of didlike it is. Oh, yeah why is OCD not alabetically arranged as CDO--LOL

Obviously, it isn't. 'Homophobia' is a now-PC term used as an attack on anyone who doesn't like, or agree, with that lifestyle. If you think about it, 'homophobia' literally means 'the fear of the same sex'. I'm sure you don't have that disease, lol... There are people who dislike gays, blacks, whites, and even spiders. There is nothing wrong with any of that. You feel how you feel. It still comes down to getting along with everyone respectfully, since that is how you want to be treated. Just because you may think how great it might be to rob a bank and have that money, you know you won't do the action because it is wrong. Think what you want about anybody, but your actions should always convey the essence of 'Do the right thing' and 'The golden rule'. You have freedom of choice, but not freedom of consequence.

It's more complicated than that. People may dislike homosexuals. But homophobia means there is an irrational fear of gay people that is more than dislike. To be homophobic means that you fear their lifestyle will completely overwhelm you're own. You have an innate dislike that may have been brought upon by some traumatic episode or strong belief that you can not shake. Most people aren't homophobic, though. It's kind of an old term to sugar coat people's feelings toward gay people

It's a good point, but if the dislike is "unreasonable" and sever enough, it can be considered a phobia. If one were sitting next to you on the bus, would you have to get up and move? Phobia. Could you just ignore them? Dislike.

Good point. Although I do think a lot of people who fear homosexuality ARE homophobes (they're scared that if they accept a gay person that they'll automatically be gay, someone will think poorly of them, or some twisted logic like that). If you dislike someone, you're not phobic of them, just prejudiced (which is not good).

Good point - who decided that all ****-dislike should be called ****-phobia? Probably the same people who decided that "gay", a word with an already assigned meaning, should be reassigned to mean homosexual.

It's not a phobia. It's just called that in order to turn a belief into a "disease."
Accuse them of heterophobia.
