Job shortages...like when all those men would stand in front of the gates of the work places and get picked to work?

Their heat was turned off, lights were turned off...

The children were going to live with the aunt...family separation?

Hope these helped!

soup kitchens, suicide (high rates of), abandonment (lots of men left their families, especially children, behind by leaving and never coming back), and lots of emigration (lots of americans in the north moved to canada to find better lifestyles and better jobs).
