I've heard that when parked for short periods of time it saves more gas to leave the engine running, because it would take more gas to start the car up again. Does anyone know the general time when it's cheaper to turn the car off? Does it depend on the car?

30 seconds. If the engine is left to idle for more than 30 seconds, then its more economical to turn off the engine.

It's illegal to leave a car running unattended in KY. I always shut the engine off whenever I'm planning on stopping for more than a minute.
