Civilization 4 is bloody heroin. The premise is that you're one of the major nations of the world and that you're trying to build technology, culture, religion and political might through bartering with other cultures and waging war. It's all turn based. so you don't have to worry about ding when you go to the fridge for a beer. Each of the civilizations has their own special troop type to give them advantages in gameplay. (japan has samurai, america has marines, spain has crusader knights, etc) and you can adopt different civics and laws to rule your people with.

If you like military strategy in realtime, right now I'm playing Warhammer: Mark of Chaos. The phalanx formations are nice, graphics amazing and the gameplay a lot easier than most war sims. Sadly not much in the ways of economy or territory management... ei: you dont get to make buildings, forts and such, it's all troop vs troop.

Definitely pick up Civ 4... it is the best of its kind

the Total War series is excellent with a good mix of real time and turn based play. Command and Conquer 3 is coming out soon, that will be an sweet game. Supreme Commander just came out a while ago, ive played it a couple times and it is way fun. just some ideas i can think of.
