First of all,,,he needs to see his doctor.
The doctor will probably wean him off the Clonazepam slowly if he's been on it for very long,,,thats not something you can just stop on your own like that,,,he would be having withdrawals.
His doctor can tell him the best alternative,,,

1. GET A NEW JOB!!! Nothing is worth your health and happiness.
2. Melatonin. You can find this at any Natural Food Store.
3. Shut the T.V. and the lights out 30 Min. prior to bed time, the light keeps the brain moving.
4. Journal. Take time to write the things that are "floating" around in your head.

I agree with the responders who stated that your dad needs medical attention. He should also tell the physician why he started taking sleeping pills in the first place. If he has an untenable situation at work, insomnia may be a symptom of other and greater issues that need resolution.

RE: melatonin. Don't start it unless and until the physician approves it. Like many "natural' products, the interactions with Rx products is not well understood.

He MUST talk to his doctor about this. He cannot stop the Clonazepam suddenly. The doctor must ween him off of them slowly or he can have very serious seizures.

Please have him call his doctor. There are other sleeping medications out there that are MUCH safer than tranquilizers.

melatonin has worked for me, valerian root capsules, can get them at the walmart, drug store or health food store. catnip tea. warm bath before bed, there are cd's that are relaxing, helps get rid of stress and helps you sleep, he should be walking a bit after dinner, would release some of the tension, and would be a great time for the two of you to spend some time together, and you could coax him when he doesn't want to go.
there are all kinds of things to do without drugs. he does need to tell his doctor that he is doing this, he may need to wean himself from them gradually.
good luck, you are a sweet child to be asking this for your dad, you are both very fortunate.
