I'm really (desperately) looking for work and a lot of options have been closing fast. I'm a well-educated transgendered person, embarking on becoming a woman and I've been running into problems finding a job - unless I want to work as an escort, massage worker, etc. I love working w/make-up and I've been wondering if I could get a job w/one of the make-up outlets at the mall. Do I need a diploma from a beauty school? Any information about getting such a job will be greatly appreciated.

Hello there, to the best of my knowledge, a keen interest in all things cosmetic/skin related and a background in retail is the best start
.I know several beauty therapists that have gone down this path after taking various courses in the beauty Field. I would definitely take a class in cosmetic make up and then check out other courses in your area. I used to go to college with a trans gender person and she was treated with utmost respect and was an excellent student. May I suggest Mac, Bobbi Brown , Benefit and Urban Decay (who are currently working on making all their products vegan) as other good places to seek employment.. Good to hear you are trying this as a career, I have enjoyed training in this field immensely and am very popular amongst my female friends ....especially before a big night out...lol

As a licensed cosmetologist...when working at a make-up counter at the mall you don't need a license because you're not supposed to touch their faces yourself...you're supposed to show them how to apply it themselves. But I enjoy being a Mary Kay Cosmetics Consultant. You don't need a license for that either, but you're self-employed and work the schedule you want and get everything 50% off. You can even earn a company car, and you're never denied a job because of the way you look. You just have to make sure you are applying your products so that everyone can ask you where you get your make-up and who taught you how to wear it. Your face does your job for you!!! How about selling Mary Kay? I have been doing it for two years and Love it. I worked in Corporate America for most of my life and now I have freedom and flexibility to set my own hours and have fun while making money. All your training is for free so even if you don't stay with it forever it is a great stepping stone.

you do not need any special training, e.g. cosmetology school & etc., however knowledge in the field is a must!! if you have a cosmetology license it definitely gives you a leg up but is not required at all.
you have to keep in mind that it is a retail job, if your selling abilities outshines your makeup skills they will most likely still hire you. call your local store/counter & ask, it never hurts to try.

All major brands have web sites with special sections on available jobs and basic info, like what type of education is required
