I hooked up a motherboard to a case, plugged in the power, reset, etc in to where it said, plugged everything in accordingly, then plugged the power supply in, and it turned on...without being on...if that makes sense. So all the fans, lights, everything ran, but nothing came on. I couldnt shut it down or turn it on...why? I plugged everything in correctly where it was supposed to. I thought it could be coincidence, but, it happened again...Though...I only replaced the power supply without plugging anything in except the power. Though...after it turned on...I hit the power...and it turned on...and it doesnt stay on after I shut it down...its weird and complicated. What causes this?

Well...the first time, I put a motherboard in...hooked the case to it...hooked the motherboard to hard drives and cd drives...then...I plugged the power supply in to everything. Everythings fine till I plug in the power cord. Then everything turns on...without being on...the first time I couldnt turn it on or anything.

The second time is this time. I was having PSU problems so I replaced it. Everything hooked up fine, I plugged in the power cord and it turned on...without being on. Then, I pressed the power button...and it turned on after being on...its hard to explain. Its like...it runs without running.

All the answers given here are good.Is this a new computer or just a new motherboard?I ran into a strange problem like that once and it was the switch that turns your computer on and off ,it was a bad switch.I listed a good site that may be able to help you solve your problem in source.

I hope that you did not fry your motherboard. But, other than that...
Try taking out all the cards--sound, modem, etc, one at a time and rebooting. It could be that one of those are bad. If one is bad, it will start up without it and you will know which one needs replacing.

Otherwise, I am a little confused. Did you replace the PSU? If so, is it powerful enough to run everything? Did you replace the motherboard? If so, there are instances where a new license needs to be purchased to use the OS that is currently installed (just another way for MS to make money).

I have encountered similar problems over the years when building computers. It happen because the bios settings or jumpers settingx on the motherboard are not right. It also happens if your memory or cpu are dead/fried or if they are not making full contact.

First off can you at least get to bios screen? If not then its a hardware problem. Try switching out your memory and cpu one of those could be bad. Also try reseating (take out and plug it back it) the memory and cpu.

IF you are using an older motherboard say over 4 years old it may have little black jumpers on it that you have to physically move to match the cpu. You shall have to check your motherboard manual.

good luck

Not sure what you mean.

Is it that you replaced a power supply, then attached power cord to the power supply, and turned the switch on the power supply to on, but left the computer turned off?
Then the computer fired up briefly, only to shut itself back off.
Is this what you mean?

My computer does the same thing sometimes. We turn it on, but it doesn't "come on". All we do is unplug everything for a few minutes and try again. If that doesn't work, unplug everything for half an hour or so and try again. Mine usually comes on after the 2nd or 3rd try. Because it does this, we leave our computer on all the time, we never turn off.
