Many people are so inept at covering up their stuttering that there may be some other family members in other generations who stutter and nobody realizes it. Stutterers are usually not as social and choose carefully to whom and when they speak. They are good at substituting words for ones that they can't say easily. Most people who stutter are walking thesauruses! If they can't say "skinny" they say "thin" and if they can't easily say "fat" they say "chubby." Only a doctor or speech therapist could say if there is a reason to "be concerned." The Stuttering Foundation has a list of specialists in stuttering that they refer people to for therapy. These specialists have been trained to work with those who stutter and some have been stutterers themselves.

It has not been conclusively proven that stuttering runs in a family. I stutter but none of my parents/grandparents stutter neither does my daughter / nephew / niece ! See this website which generally answers all the questions related to stuttering/stammering.
