I've been playing for a little while (like 10 years) and have realized that the kind of music you want to play determines whether you need a teacher or not.
Classical guitarists are trained in sight reading, proper posture, and hand picking for example. Personally, I think to a point having an instructor robs you of some creative indentity. In essence, you being to start to sound like their music, and not your own.
My theory has always been to detune your strings, pick a tuning and just have fun with the thing. Of course, I have never played with the goal to make it big or anything. There are more important things to me. But of course, everyone is different.

It depends on 1) what kind of music U want play (classical guitar or jazz needs teacher) 2) what fits U more (I had teacher but I know cool guitarists which started themselves) I think the best is a combination of both. Definitely is good to play with other people to catch new things and compare.

I taught myself how to play the guitar about ten years ago and now I teach other people. The thing is, if you really want to know something you can learn it yourself. Try to play along with songs that you know (old folk ones work the best, i.e. CCR, stuff like that) learn basic chords and then just hang out with other people who play as well. Music is something that we can all create, so you don't need someone to teach you how to do that. Go on www.chordfind.com to find all the chords and structures and just figure it out as you go. Good luck and happy playing.

My father taught me how to play, and I loved it, but there were some holes in the process that could have been filled in by having a tutor. But I actually took guitar classes in college, and I liked that a lot too. It's probably cheaper than lessons...I say find a class.

i think it's very possible to train yourself to play guitar, my friend did it and he amazed me every time i heard him rock out! i however took lessons and i learned a lot of things my friend never even dreamed of. plus my teacher taught me to read music by note and by chord. (my friend only played tabs). through my lessons i was exposed to all sorts of different music and styles so i was much more diverse and i had a bigger repertoire than he. if you can afford it i strongly recommend paying someone to teach you. you'll also learn faster and make more progress when someone teaches you.

personally ithink that it is better to learn yourself(which i am doing) than to have someone teach you. because sometimes they can only teach you how to play certain styles and if your not satisied then you just payed a bunch of money for nothing. and then you still done know how to play whay you wanted.
