I think that the American Idol judges are very silly when it comes to judging performances. They already have everything they want made up in their minds. If someone doesn't fit the judges definition of "good", that person is not going to move forward no matter how talented they really are. I find that the judges are not very open. They claim to know the music business, but in reality they only know the POP MUSIC business. So to answer your question... they didn't know who 311 was because they live in a pop music bubble.
I personally don't like the show because I find that Paula, Randy, and even Simon to be very ignorant when it comes to certain matters. I makes me very frustrated.

I always thought the judges received a copy of the songs that were to be sung and did some research....listened to the originals, etc. But I was surprised to hear that they didn't know that 311 song last night.
I don't understand the judges sometimes. They are all behind the Justin Timberlake look-a-like, but I didn't think he did very well last night. Then they were against the Jack Osbourne look-a-like and although I didn't recognize or like that song, I still felt it showcased his voice and that he did a good job.

OMG I didn't see that episode but I know and love 311, and I'm a girlie girl. How can you be in the music ind and not know who they are. Maybe they're more musically retarded than we thought

Hey, I had never heard that song before and I've only heard OF 311...I couldn't name one of their songs for you, and I'm a music fan. Still, Blake's performance rocked, maybe even that much more because I hadn't heard the song before.

I was shocked too. I mean, "All Mixed Up" is a well known song and they are in the MUSIC INDUSTRY! Dumbfounded. I tell you though, Blake is my favorite of the guys. I hope he's around for quite a while.
