Here's an excellent website that will help you learn about and find cruelty free products (i.e. no animal testing, no animal based ingredients): http://www.caringconsumer.com/
This site has a list of animal ingredients (all the different names) so you can avoid them.

And www.cosmeticscop.com has a guide to/dictionary of ingredients used in make up, shampoo, soap, etc. so you can check of an ingredient is a form of oil or wax.

Shops like Bodycare (in the UK) have really ethical products that you can use..
