How do you get a job on wall street? At a place such as the NYSE... What do you have to go to college for? Finance? Econ? Accounting? Also, do you have to go to a prestigious school like Wharton or what?

The NYSE employs lots of different types of people. The jobs range form Compliance and Enforcement to Floor Trader, auditor, operation/clearance specialists, etc. Most of the Floor Traders, though, are employed by brokerage firms like Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers, Goldman, etc or Specialist Firms that maintain orderly markets in specific stocks. To get there it doesn't hurt to have a degree in business (accounting, finance or economics). The more top tier the school, the better your chances so, whereas 30 years ago all you needed was smarts and a set of ba--s, today you need the paper. Most firms that hire out of school do so for specific positions as "analysts". These jobs include operations and middle office, sales and trading; not to leave out areas like Credit and Treasury. One of the major benefits of the top tier schools like Wharton, MIT, Stamford, Penn, Columbia Business, etc. is that is where the recruiters go for talent. It also is not uncommon for a firm to put its recruits through graduate school once they've been at the job and prove themselves for at least two years.

Go to a college that has a Business degree program that has good times with the business community. Firms Like Goldman Sachs, Smith Barney & JP Morgan-Chase actually come to these campuses to do seminars and sniff out quality internship candidates.

Major in Finance, Information Systems, Marketing. Economics is too heady unless you are a Super-Star & plan on going to Grad School ---don't bother.

They are looking for a type of person, not necessarily education.

Not everyone on the street has a Business Degree at all. Depending on where wind up at everyone has to take lincesing exams like Series 6, 63 and or 7 anyway.

While in college try to get the summer internships so you can get a feel to see if that is the career for you.

The Street is not for everyone.

With risk comes great reward.....but don't overlook the RISK.

They are however agressive, $$$ motivated, self -starters who can work in a team environment or on their own.
