I'm wanting to do my dissertation on something to do with American Lit but my mind is blank and cant think what to do

Your best bet is to talk to the senior faculty in your department. If you are lucky, one will suggest a topic to you. Besides, one of them will have to chair the project, so it likely has to be something they are interested in.
