I do not think Atlantis ever existed. Plato was a writer. Writers have been know to make things up. Have you ever read The Republic? Do you think a place like that exists too?

Atlantis is supposed to be the eight continent that sank beneath the waves in a single day and night. Supposedly it was in the middle of the Atlantic ocean and the Alantains were a superior race at the time who had advanced technology and medicine and they angered the Gods so the Gods punished them by sending a huge tidal wave and an earthquake that sent them to the bottom of the sea. Some people think the Canary Islands are all that is left of Atlantis. It was supposed to be near the pillars of Hercules.
