So - I got this little sample of oil-free hydrating gel. And I liked it. So my friend got me the regular one and it says on the bottom "Apply after moisurizer"

I thought is WAS a moisturizer? Do I need to use it with another product or is it fine on it's own?

Thanks for your advice.

Oh, I have combination skin, but last year moved to a very dry climate, so I'm still figuring out what I need to take care of my skin. (Figured someone might ask)

The hydrating gel and moisturizer work differently, which is why you might use both. The moisturizer works on the very top layer of your skin to instantly add moisture and smooth. The gel goes deeper and doesn't moisturize the top. Not everyone needs both though, it just depends on your skin. But, they do work differently, so using them both doesn't just double what your doing.

For example, in the summer, I only use oil-free hydrating gel and no lotion during day. At night, I use it and a small touch of moisturizer. In the winter, I need regular moisturizer in the morning and night and add the gel at night for that extra moisture.

It's simply a product recommendation, kind of like on shampoo bottles when it says Rinse and Repeat (they just want you to use more of the product so you have to purchase more in the end). So, if it feels ok just using the gel, just use the gel. I use several Mary Kay products myself in combination because I love the moisturizer, but not the gel just by itself. Do what feels good for your skin type.

That oil free hydration is EXTRA hydration for your skin. It is great to use at night to moisterize.. Since you have combo skin, use it to balance out. And yes the reason why it says to apply after moisterizer is because MK wants you to apply it after you use the regular Timewise or Velocity Moisterizer, But it can be alone.

It is oil-free and feels silky soomth! I love it!

If it works for you, you can use it as moisturizer, it's no biggie. They probably just want to sell you more products.
