Cap stands for Justice. He shows that American Know-How, Leadership, Ingenuity, and desire can get things done. He has been a warrior, an Avenger, a Government agent, and is a symbol for Youth of America to cheer for.
That being said, to kill him off in such a way as that is pathetic. He needs to be destroyed and his vaunted shild melted into scrap

It may be a shock in the comic book world today that Captain America was gunned down by a sniper & you ask do we, as Americans, still need this character? Yes & No! Yes, we need this character more because he represent the patriotic spirit to our country & has done so since 1941. And no, because of what's going on in the world today & comic book companies decide to put real life events & intergrate them into our favorite superhero storylines, he's nothing but a symbol of 20th Century icons that have lived their time & already have past their prime. Who knows? Marvel Comics will bring him back into the pages of comic books again whether it will be Steve Rogers who comes back from the dead or someone new in the Red, White, & Blue tights.

From a character standpoint, I don't think it's a huge loss.
From a sociopolitical and symbolic standpoint, I think it will be twisted and interpreted a million different (wrong) ways in the days to come on talk radio and Fox News.
Besides, the "death" of Captain America falls in line perfectly with a storyline that Marvel has been running for a while.

Yes, we still need him! The problem is, Marvel has made more money with flawed, nasty anti-heores, than they have with good, kind, noble heroes lately. I am afraid that they are gearing up to replace Cap with a nasty guy.
But that’s not the kind of hero we need! That’s not the kind of hero who will inspire us to be our best, so that when trouble happens here, we will have the intestinal fortitude to face it and stand.
Marvel is weakening America and encouraging our enemies with this.
Need Captain America! Do we still need him!
He is needed now, more than ever…..

I think he is still as important as the day he was drafted (no pun intended). Cap is an ideal, and a reflection of the era he was created. I know its not hip to be patriotic today, when people prefer to polarize on party labels and make accusations about whos at fault, and I think thats precisely why we need him.

We have WAY cooler superheros now. Captain America was a hero in the time when Americans were proud of who they were. With today's liberals and all these people who are ashamed to be Americans, superheros who fought for justice and what was right are no longer needed.
Congratulate your democratic and liberal leaders for dumbing down and wussifying the populace so that patriotic American superheros like Captain America are no longer needed.

I would guess that most of the kids today don't even know who Captain America is, so no, he's not as important to the National Psyche as around the times of WWII...
