It's a way for waitstaff to be paid based on their performance. The restaurant itself only pays them $2 or $3 per hour, they are expected to earn the rest of their pay based on how well they treat the customers.

It's common courtesy honey. Waitstaff, hotel staff and hairstylists are offering their services so you are supposed to thank them that way with a tip. In the United States you are supposed to tip 15%-20%. You don't deserve to work for nothing if you were paid minimum wage as any of the above I have listed. Their income depends on tips!!! You better REMEMBER THAT!!

Because a waitress only makes 2.13 an hour (in the state of VA) and that isn't nearly enough to live on. It is a job that is not dependent entirely on your performance (a salaried job you get paid a set amount with no variable) but it is also at the discretion and whim of the customer. They have a bad day the waitress may not get anything even if the service was good. A good tipper can really turn a day around.

My ex once told me that the server's wage is like $3 and some odd change. I couldn't believe that when I first heard it. He used to own 3 restaurants, and was a waiter himself once, so he would know this for sure. I always thought that waiters earned at least minimum wage just like they would at any other job.

So, now u see why it's so important that we tip: servers don't make enough money as it is. It's sad, and I wish I knew why it's like that!

I used to be a waitress and it was one of the hardest jobs I've had. You work 9 hour shifts, sometimes double, and you smile a lot, deal with bratty kids and up tight customers only to get a 2 dollar tip when you're making 2 and hour. Not to mention I also had to pay for parking. So don't be stingy...tip please.

Because, the waiter or waitress depends on these tips. Most only make half of min. wage on their actual pay check.

You should have been born in Antebellum times if you don't want to tip for service. LMAO. But, seriously, it's polite to tip people who perform services for you, providing they only get paid a couple bucks hourly wage and most of their income is from tips.

Selfish lady..get it now?
