While there are convertible seats out there that start at 5lbs, most of them are not appropriate for newborns. The harness slots are way to high. They should be at or below for rearfacing. I would recommend an infant seat to start. The Graco SafeSeat 1 goes up to 30lbs and 30inches and will usually last most kids to at least one year. The Snugride does not last as long, but is also good. For strollers, you do not necessarily have to get one that matches the car seat. Travel systems are nice, but the strollers are usually pretty big. Most car seats will fit on other brands, such as Peg Perego or Inglesina. You can also get something like the Snap n Go or similiar. It is a stroller frame that the car seat snaps onto. Once the car seat is outgrown you could move up to a lightweight stroller such as a Maclaren. For travel systems, avoid anything by Evenflo. They are crappy and fall apart.
For convertible seats, do not fall for the 3 n 1 marketing ploy, like the Alpha Omega. They will not be the last seat you need. The harness slots are super low and it makes a crappy booster.
The Britax Marathon or Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe are great options. After either of these, most kids can graduate to a booster, which are inexpensive.
Hope this helps!

If you only want to buy one carseat and have it last until 2 years old (and actually longer) then you'll be looking for what is called a convertible car seat. The weight limit on them is as low as 5lbs and as high as 50lbs, and the seat can be rear facing until the child turns 1, then forward facing. The downside is that a convertible seat always stays in the car, whereas an infant carrier can be removed and taken places while the child is still strapped in.
Here's a link to the stroller I have: http://www.amazon.com/InStep-Safari-TT-Single-Stroller/dp/B000EI2O3Y it can also be used right from birth because the seat is fully reclinable (so you don't have to wait until the stomach and head muscles are better developed). The handle bar also adjusts for shorter and taller people (I'm 5'3" and my dad is 6'2" and we can adjust it so its easy to use for both of us). The front tire has swivel or lock options (locked is for jogging and running). I've always been able to maneuver it easily through the aisles in stores. You also have the option of 5 point or 3 point harness. The weight limit is 50lbs, and it folds down flat enough to fit in the trunk of my Corolla.
My nearly 4 year old son is still using both his convertible car seat and the stroller.

Graco is awesome.
Most of their strollers go up to 4 years of age.
Car seats...they have some infant seats that go up to 1 year old, or you could get a convertible carseat that would take you through your baby's toddler years.
Not to mention, their prices are fantastic!

i recommend the travel strollers. they have the car seat and stroller plus you can use them until you child is two or three. you'll need to buy a new car seat once your child no longer fits in the baby carry-er but the stroller is good for a few years. when you do buy a new car seat try and get one that later one you can just remove the straps and use as a booster seat for when your child is 4-6. Congrats on the baby.

The Britax Marathon Carseat is the best that i've found. It goes from 5 -65 pounds and has a very very high safety rating.

My husband and I did lots of research on carseats for our son. We eventually decided on the Britax Marathon. It is spendy but I can say that it is definately worth it. The Britax Marathon is good from new born infant up to 65 lbs. They are top of the line safety and easy to install and use. However, we did see a news report on the Britax Roundabout and its not as good as the Marathon or Decathon. The Marathon runs about $270 but when you think about not having to buy new seats for your kid as they grow its worth it. We have had ours for a couple months and I absolutely love it. I would definately buy another Britax Marathon.
