why don't they just approach me and talk to me? I'm always smiling and laughing, is that NOT approachable in your eyes?

They are probably more comfortable approaching your son? Who knows! Either way, it doesn't show much confidence and maturity, and I don't think it's really appropriate of them. If you are friendly and smiling, a confident sensible woman will approach you, not your son.
I'm a single mom, and I'd freak out if some strange guy started asking my son questions about me.

#1 they start with your child beacuse he is the ice breaker. So donr snap and call the kid Mom A SKIZZY *** GUZZLER TRAMP. whe she asks whers your mama baby.A ilttle restraint and you can be callen her what ever you want and she will be agreeing with you

They probably think you'd like them to approach him first. Showing that they have some interest in what he thinks about them first.
Maybe they are shy. Not sure, but you should ask the next one that does it! You may be surprised as to the answer!

Are you the man or the woman? YOU have got to approach them, that's just the way it is. You're lucky - when they talk to your son you have indications of interest - USE THAT.

It's just an easy way to approach a guy - through the kids. Kids make everything less intense.

have your son give a stright answer " my father doesn't want me to talk to strangers, but you can talk to him" As a woman who had children(they are grown now) and was single , i wouldn't want any man talking to my children at all, let alone about our personal life...woman can be just as crazy, men aren't always the culprit for stalking crimes...if they want to speak to you they will... :)
