OK, so I've been trying to find a 'technical' link to a non-layman article on that for days with no luck. As far as I know, this expidition is going to investigate a detchment fault that exists on a mid-ocean ridge. The crust is always zero at the mid-ocean ridge, but at a detachment, the area exposed as zero is spread out, as the low-angle detchment faulting basically rips the crust off the mantle. As we explore the oceans more, this is being discovered to be a more and more important factor in divergent margins. This is the first detailed exploration of it.
