I believe it is different for eveyone. I can only give you the feelings that I had felt. My ex was not meeting my emotional needs. He did not make me feel that I was important, he did not make me feel that how I felt was validated, he put others infront of me and was taking me for grantid. When I would try and talk to him about these issuse on more then one occassion he would tell me I was nuts. He had no respect for me and in return I lost respect for him. I no longer longed to be with him. I did not want to talk to him nor did I want to have intimacy with him. I did not care how I talked to him nor if I was meeting any of his needs any more. Eventualy it turns into resentment. I turned cold towards him but none of this took place before I did yrs of crying and feeling worthless to the one I loved. So even though we were still married there was no emtional love there.

legal divorce is exactly what it says
social divorce is when the family and friends of both parties are adjusting
here is the definition for emotional divorce:
The Emotional Divorce
This is the process in which each of you has to come to grips with your separation and begin to view yourself as a person separate and distinct from your spouse. This is where divorce gets messy. Painful. This is all about the grieving both of you have to do.

You have become roomates with your spouse and don't share with them anymore.

Its like an emotional void exists between the two of you.

I believe it is when you do not feel emotionally connected to your partner anymore. When you do not enjoy or even like being in their company or having conversations with them.
