I got sucked into "His Dark Materials" but I'm torn between that and the "Sally Lockheart" books. But I think I will have to go with "His Dark Materials" and of those, I think I enjoyed "The Subtle Knife" the most - not quite sure why, but there you go. I thought "The Amber Spyglass" was overlong (but only by like, 30-40 pages), but I loved the end - so bittersweet.

Is there going to be anyone who doesn't say His Dark Materials, I mean it's been compared to trilogies like Lord of the Rings and the Narnia Chronicles and personally I think that it's better than the two combined. The best book in it, in my opinion is the Subtle Knife, not to say that the Northern Lights and the Amber Spyglass aren't great novels because they are. But I really like his interpretation of dimensions and the second book really leads in to the third nicely. Also I think that Lyra is one of the best female characters that I've ever seen in any book.

His Dark Materials is the best. The best book in it is The Amber Spyglass.

The Sally Lockhart books are excellent too though particularly the first two.

They are all good!
But no-one has mentioned Clockwork, or The Firework Maker's Daughter.
These are younger children's books, but brilliant stories.
Philip Pullman writes books to be read, and because of that, they are all good.

Difficult question! 'His Dark Materials' for the scale, complexity and consistency of plot and ideology. And just fantastic books! But I love the Sally Lockhart series too as they're brilliant stories - again, superbly worked out - and he's not afraid to confront painful issues. I suppose if I had to, I'd plump for 'His Dark Materials'.

His Dark Materials, hands down. Its one of the best series I've ever read.
My favorite book of all of his is probably "The Amber Spyglass". I love how he wraps up the entire series, and the imagery of the places visited in the book, is outstanding.

His Dark Materials, by far.

I saw the play last year; it was amazing! I've only read Northern Lights but now I am definitely going to read the others.

Can't wait for the film!
