What are the symptoms of a person doing it?

Auto-sabotage is another term for being self-destructive. The symptoms would be failures in their lives repeating until the person considers himself bound toward failure or being rejected and alone in life. It is someone who dooms themselves by repeating the same behavior that has cuased them harm in the past. They need some positive patterning and a new start. @8-)

Perhaps like "self-sabotage"...it's a negative outlook on things that you cause to come true. It often happens in the following situation:
Woman has been cheated on in past and accuses faithful boyfriend of someday cheating on her. She obsesses over it so much and pushes him away, causing him to feel distant and someday cheat on her.
Or: you obsess about not looking like an idiot so much that it increases your anxiety and makes you look like an idiot--self-fulfilling prophecy.

I believe in cosmic energy, if you put out bad vibes, bad vibes is what you'll get.

self defeating yourself-- being your own worst enemy
like when you want to go on a diet and quit eatting junk food
and you want to save up for a size seven outfit you have wanted and you end up buying the junk food and gaining the weight and having to use the money to buy a bigger size outfit instead
