Hi, what you should do when downloading any file is to right click on the file and from the options that appear there should be one that says scan with, scroll down to this option and left click on it, the file should then be scanned by your anti virus program and will then let you know if it contains a virus or not, i do this with every program i download just to be on the safe side.

When you are downloading it you should have a option to save it. That is what you want to do. Then scan it with your anti-virus BEFORE you open or run it. There are many, many free anti-virus programs out there. I will not even try to suggest the best one since it comes down to user preference mostly.

I would only download an exe file from a trusted source.
Use your virus scanner to scan the file before opening it.
Also set a restore point before opening it.
This is not foolproof. The exe is probably a self extracting compressed file. Most virus scanners can't detect viruses in compressed files. In this case you will not know before you open it and then it could be too late.

You have several options when it comes to free anti-virus software, in no particular order (pick just one):
AVG Free, http://free.grisoft.com/ (Vista ready version available)
Avast, http://www.avast.com/ (Vista ready version available)
Active Virus Shield, http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp? (not Vista ready), based on the Kaspersky engine
Safety and Security Center, http://daol.aol.com/safetycenter (@aol.com email address required but available for free), powered by McAfee (not Vista ready), the only free one that offers a firewall, antivirus and antispyware protection.
That being said, DO NOT execute the file you are downloading until you have antivirus software installed. Scan the file with whichever one you have chosen before you run it. Then scan your whole system after you have installed the file.

Don't download it.
If you need app ocassionally, use rapidshare. You'll find pretty much all you need there, with a decent speed. And moreover, more reliable working files.
Good Luck,
