My memory of security clearance is that there are four levels:

Confidential
Restricted
Secret
Top Secret.

Within Top Secret, there are a number of sub-classes. This is where you get into compartmented information out of spy movies.

You will know without a doubt if you have one. The higher the clearance, the more rigorous the investigation. High level clearances require documentation of all jobs and residences for the last ten years, listing everyone who you care about in a foriegn country, a polygraph examination, plus interviews of people who know you, and have known you for a number of years.

Security clearances are active for a certain amount of time. If its current then the company that is hiring you will not have to pay to run one on its own.
