I want to pick my own specifications, but not pay for some outrageous features I'll never use. I also don't want to pay for a piece of junk either. Anyone have good experience with any custom building PC places on line?

NewEgg.com is far and away the best online source for PC's and parts. You can read reviews of other customers and write for tech support like; "Will this memory work with this board?" and get a response.

I use Dell's at work and am very unhappy with their feature set.
Perhaps it is just the models we buy, but they are cheap. Everything is extra. The one I am using right now only has one SATA port. That is cheap.

TigerDirect is not on my list. A quick search resulted in this site: http://www.tigerdirectsucks.org/wp/ which should give anyone pause.

If you go with a pre-built, you should pay a bit extra and have them assemble it and "burn it in" for a few hours. Most of the failures I've had when building a PC happen within the first day.

First: go to the manufacturer's website and go through it, acting as if you were going to buy one exactly as you'd customize it to your specs. Price it out. Fetch a final model number. You can opt out of the purchase at the last moment, or at least navigate away from the "Yes I want it!" page or close the browser or whatever...

*Then* and only then go places like CPU magazine and Radio Shack and maybe Ebay (or, heck, even Google's Froogle) and look for the *official part numbers* you garnered from the manufacturer's website!
